PGT Window Replacement: The Sarasota Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a PGT window with a failed sash, fogged glass, a crank that spins without moving, or a balance that lets the sash slam shut, we stock and install PGT-compatible window replacements across Sarasota. Typical installed replacement costs here run $450 to $1,400 per window depending on the series, glass package, and whether the frame needs work. Most swaps we do same day once the part’s confirmed because we carry the common PGT hardware on our trucks, not in a warehouse three states away. The way most Sarasota homeowners find us is a window that won’t stay open or won’t lock, usually right after a storm season that’s been extra salty to the hardware.

We’re an independent service provider, not a PGT corporate dealer. That matters because we’re not tied to a single product line or a call center script. Ed Winslow’s crew has pulled apart, repaired, and replaced PGT windows from the older WinGuard lines to the newer 5500 and 7700 series on houses from Palmer Ranch to Indian Beach. We’ll tell you honestly if the part is worth replacing, or if the whole window’s reached the point where replacement makes more sense.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT has built several window series over the years, and the replacement parts aren’t always interchangeable between them. The WinGuard series, which dominated Sarasota impact window installs from about 2000 through 2018, uses a different balance system and different sash dimensions than the current 5500 series aluminum line, the 7700 vinyl line, and the newer EnergyVue models. If you don’t know your exact series, look for the PGT label etched on the glass or stamped into the frame in the lower corner of the sash. It’ll give you the series name, the glass package code, and sometimes the manufacture date.

The compatibility gotcha we see often: a homeowner orders a replacement sash based only on the glass width and height, then it doesn’t seat because the frame’s jamb depth is different. A WinGuard single-hung from 2010 isn’t the same frame as a 5500 from 2023, even if the visible glass dimensions match within an eighth of an inch. For PGT specifically, we always match the series first, then the glass package (especially impact laminate versus standard insulated), then the hardware. For OEM versus aftermarket: for PGT balance systems and cam locks, we use OEM or PGT-spec parts because the tolerances matter and aftermarket copies tend to wear out or rattle. For things like crank handles and sash glides, quality aftermarket parts work fine and cost about 40 percent less.

If you have a PGT window that’s original to a home built before 2010, we can often match it. If it’s a discontinued line or a custom geometry unit, we’ll tell you before we order anything.

Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing

  • Sash drops when you let go, or slams shut. That’s the balance system worn out. In Sarasota, spring balances corrode faster than they would inland because the salt air eats the plating, and a corroded spring either loses tension or snaps.
  • Glass fogs between the panes. The seal on the insulated glass unit failed. Once moisture gets in, it doesn’t come back out. PGT sealed units typically last 12 to 18 years here before the heat and humidity get them.
  • Crank turns but the vent panel doesn’t move. The operator gear is stripped, usually on casement windows that face the morning sun. The gear teeth are plastic on many PGT casement operators, and plastic plus direct Gulf sun equals a shorter life.
  • Water trails or staining under the window after rain. The weep system is clogged or the weatherstripping is shot. PGT frames drain through the bottom track, and if the fabric weatherstripping dries out and cracks, water gets past the sash and shows up on the interior sill.
  • Lock won’t engage or pops open. The cam or keeper is worn or misaligned. This isn’t just a nuisance - a window that won’t lock is a security issue, and on impact-rated windows, a misaligned lock usually means the sash isn’t seated square in the frame.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what PGT window replacement currently runs in the Sarasota market, installed:

  • Balance system replacement: $180 - $340 per sash, including parts, alignment, and testing.
  • Lock and keeper replacement: $90 - $210 per window.
  • Crank operator and hinge replacement: $240 - $520 per casement vent.
  • Insulated or impact glass unit replacement: $450 - $1,400 per pane, depending on the size and whether it’s laminated impact glass or standard insulated glass.
  • Full window replacement (sash and frame, PGT 5500 or 7700): $900 - $2,600 installed per window, depending on size and impact rating.

Every estimate we give is a written line-item quote. The price you sign is the price you pay, and if the job gets more complicated than we scoped, you hear about it before we do anything, not after the invoice lands. Every window part replacement comes with our 36500-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right. That’s not a warranty card in a drawer. Ed’s name is on the truck, and he answers when you call.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a PGT balance or window hardware is handleable for a careful DIYer on some single-hung sashes, but we see more homeowners get hurt wrestling with a deep window frame than we like. Balance springs are under tension, even wearing out. If one snaps while you’re working in the jambs, it can take a finger with it. Impact glass sashes are heavy - a PGT WinGuard sash can run 80 to 110 pounds, and a second-story wrong move turns expensive fast.

You can check a few things safely: confirm the PGT label so you know the series, measure the visible glass to the nearest eighth, and look for obvious corrosion or cracking at the pivot points. But if the failure involves a spring, a sealed unit, or a window more than 12 feet off the ground, let a trained tech with the right tools do it. We do this work across Sarasota every week, and a repair typically takes under an hour once the part’s confirmed. Call (941) 267-0779 and we’ll walk you through what we’re seeing and what it’ll cost.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"The old aluminium sliders howled every afternoon storm and swelter came straight through the glass. The new impact sliders shut with a sound like a bank vault and the back rooms finally hold their temperature."

PPercival Whitcombe
★★★★★

"Ed measured every opening himself and walked me through the product approval paperwork before I signed anything. When the inspector came he found the notice of acceptance taped inside a window like it should be and passed us first visit."

RRosalind Beaumont
★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Someone tried the back slider while we were away. The glass crazed and held, the alarm never had to earn its keep, and the police report reads better than it might have. Ed came out the next morning to check the frame himself."
